    Hello,

Though the quality of education is at par, be it USA or Canada, the opportunities in terms of the practical exposure in more in the USA. However, US is extremely competitive in comparison to Canada.
Higher education in US for Dentistry, seeks Dental Admissions Test (DAT) is a standardized test approved by the American Dental Association for use in assessing the probable success of bachelor's degree students applying for admission to first degree programs in dentistry. It consists of four parts: scientific knowledge, quantitative reasoning, verbal reasoning, and perceptual ability.

Though majority of the US universities would consider GRE scores, there are few universities that would consider DAT (Dental admission Test). Most of the universities in UK and Australia would not require even a GRE.

Usually the duration of a Masters in Dentistry last for about 4 years.

    • Applicant should have completed a bachelor's degree
    • Dental Admission Test (DAT) scores
    TOEFL scores
    GRE scores (Sometimes recommended/required)
    • Transcripts / Academic letters of evaluation
    • Resume`
    • Letters of recommendation
    • Admission interview

Similarly, Dentistry in Canada is overseen by the Canadian Dental Association (CDA), which also administers the Dental Aptitude Test (DAT). All dental courses in Canada use DAT scores as one of the determining factors in admitting new students. Students may enter dental programs after completing a certain number of prerequisite college courses (usually two to three years), and dental courses in Canada last four to five years beyond that, for a total of six to eight years total study.

    Practice the profession :

The National Board Dental Examination (NBDE) is the United States national Dental Examination for students and professionals in the area. The purpose of the examination is required in order to get licensure in United States or sometimes to apply to advanced postgraduate studies in any of the dental specialities after completing a dental degree. Foreign-trained dentists also have to take this test in order to get admission in one of the Advanced Standing programs in any US dental school.

In Canada, though each province or territory has a licensing body that establishes regulations and requirements for the licensure of general practitioners and specialists within the jurisdiction, graduates of dental schools accredited by the Commission of Dental Accreditation of Canada, may require NDEB certification to be eligible for licensure in a Canadian province.

Regardless of education, licensure or experience, foreign trained and/or licensed dentists must obtain a Canadian license to practice dentistry in Canada. However, most overseas dentists will be from non-accredited dental colleges and hence will have to take up a short term qualifying program to become eligible for Board certification.

    I hope this helps!

    Good luck!

    Hello,

Considering his experience, your son definitely stands a good chance make through the US universities for a post graduate program.
However, he would still have to meet with the eligibility criteria to qualify for the program. Generally, while many universities accept scores on the standardized test Graduate Record Examination-GRE, some might want you to take the Dental Aptitude Test (DAT).

DAT is a standardized test approved by the American Dental Association for use in assessing the probable success of bachelor's degree students applying for admission to first degree programs in dentistry. It consists of four parts: scientific knowledge, quantitative reasoning, verbal reasoning, and perceptual ability.

The American Dental Association (ADA) website has more information regarding the DAT's structure.

The admission requirements can be very specific. For instance West Virginia University requires Students must have passed the National Dental Board Examination part 1and 2.

Apart from this he should consider scores on either of the English Proficiency Test (Test of English as a Foreign Language-TOEFL / International English Language Testing Systems-IELTS) that helps the universities evaluate the ability of an individual to use and understand English in an academic setting.

Do get back with more elaboration on his profile in terms of the academic grades and scores on the test takes. If he still has to take the tests, I would recommend he attempt fot mock tests and get back with projected scores as of now.

I hope the above stated helps!

    Take care!
